Switch from Tier 2 to Tier 4 visa

If you are currently working in the UK on Tier 2 general visa, you might be interested in swapping to a Tier 4 visa so that you can go into full-time education. In this article, we look at the options for those that are looking at moving from sponsored work back into full-time education. We look at the process and offer some help and advice on the subject.

Can I switch from a Tier 2 general visa to a Tier 4 student visa?

Yes, the Tier 2 general visa is among a handful of visa routes from which you can switch to a Tier 4 visa. There are several others, but in this article, we are only going to look at Tier 2 general visas.

Can I have dependents on a Tier 4 visa?

Yes, you will be able to have dependents on your new Tier 4 visa and these should be included in a visa application. You will be required to show that you can support them during their stay in the UK.

When do I have to apply?

You will need to apply within 6 months of getting a Confirmation of Studies (CAS). You will also need to apply before your current visa runs out – but no more than 3 months before the course start date on your CAS.

How long does it take for the application to be processed?

Like most UK visas, the wait time for a Tier 4 student visa is 8 weeks as standard. Like most other visas, there is an option to speed this time up. Priority applications are processed within 10 days (at a cost of 916 pounds) or a premium service that is processed the same day (if you are one of the first 60 applications for that day for 1,047 pounds) you will also need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge and provide bio-metric information to gain a Bio-metric Residence Permit.

Will I need to provide any documentation?

Yes, there will be some documentary evidence required to support your application and this will be requested during your application process. If you get in touch, we can help you to establish exactly what you will need as every situation is slightly different.

Can I apply online?

Yes, the Government have made it much easier to apply these days by using an online portal, though you will still need to visit a branch of the Post Office to provide your bio-metric information for your Bio-metric Residence Permit.

Where can I get more help with my application?
